Our History...

Drumfork Farm's 200 year old sandstone farmhouse

Set in 300 acres of Scottish farmland, Drumfork Farm is set on a hill with views over the River Clyde. The house is a traditional sandstone farmhouse, approximately 200 years old, which has undergone extensive refurbishment over the last few years.

Drumfork is now managed by the 4th generation of the Howie family who have been here since 1888. We were the first farm to own a tractor, and in 1932 we were the first farm to install electricity. We were also the first farm to install a milking parlour.

Up until April of this year, the farm ran a heard of Ayrshire cows which gave the creamiest pale golden colour milk, which was of the highest quality, so much so that during the outbreak of the Second World War, our milk was sent for use by children and hospitals. We have now found due to the current economic climate that it is not viable to continue producing milk. This has been a major change for the farm and family, which we are still trying to adapt to.

A day in the life...

The farm consists of approx 300 acres and it produced approx 14,000 litres of milk a week in the summer months. A day on our farm started at 4am with the milking and during the summer would quite often go on until 11.30am. now we are cropping the land and running it as an arable farm, and grass letting 200 acres to a neighbouring farm, this will give us a more civilised morning start of 7am, although summer months will still find us working late on!
